Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) is one of the leading international universities of technology and natural sciences. It is well known for its excellent education, fundamental research and for the dissemination of its results to practice. Founded in 1855, it offers an inspiring working environment to researchers, and a comprehensive education to students. The Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) is an institute at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) of ETH Zurich. VAW conducts research and teaching in the fields of inland waters, hydropower, glaciers, natural hazards, river restoration, and river infrastructure. Its activities contribute to the availability of clean and renewable electricity, to the protection against floods and cryospheric hazards, to sustainable watercourses and to the generation of new knowledge in the corresponding fields. VAW provides exceptional facilities and instrumentation (ADV, PIV, PTV, high-speed imaging, laser-based sediment monitoring) for large-scale laboratory and field research. The research methods applied are physical and numerical modeling as well as hybrid modeling techniques.

Sediment management

The competencies of VAW related specifically to sediment management are in hydraulic modelling (both physical and numerical), instrumentation and measurements, and field investigations. We have multi-year advanced experience on the topics of sediment transport and reservoir sedimentation, particularly in the design of sediment bypass tunnels, both in research and consultancy services.
